old Creamer wins Sybase Classic
Paula Creamer clinched the Sybase Classic by one stroke on Sunday becoming the secondyoungest firsttime winner in LPGA Tour history.
The eighteen yearold won't be able to win two weeks in a row, though, as she has to return to Bradenton, Florida for her high school graduation on Thursday.
Creamer's previous best finish this year was a tie for third in the Takefuji Classic. Last year as an amateur, she finished second in the ShopRite Classic.
Sunday's final round started in intermittent rain. Conditions deteriorated and the final 2 hours were played in a steady rain and the temperature never broke 60 degrees.
Joo Mi Kim made a birdie putt on 10th hole for share of lead at 3 under par, where she finished tied for 5th. Jeong Jang then made birdie on the 15th hole to also join in a share of lead at 3 under par.
But then Gloria Park took the lead outright with a birdie putt on the 13th hole to get to 4 under. She finished the tournament tied for second at 5 under par.
Creamer made her move on the 14th hole, louis vuitton australia, with an approach shot on the par 4 that set up a birdie to get to 4 under. Then another approach shot on the 15th hole set up another birdie to take a share of the lead at 5 under par.
Meanwhile, Christina Kim trailing by two strokes, nearly took a share of the lead when her eagle putt hit the cup. She did make birdie to get to 4 under, one stroke back.
Jang then made a birdie on the 18th hole to get to 5 under par, and finished tied for second.
But the putt of the day came when the 18yearold Creamer made a 17foot birdie putt on the final hole to take a one stroke lead.
The only person who had a chance at after that was Christina Kim, who needed to hole out from the bunker on the 18th hole to force a playoff, but it came about 10 feet short.
Creamer took home the US$ 187,000 winner's share from the US$ 1.2 million purse. That was almost US$ 20,000 more than Creamer won in her eight starts this year and will move her from 19th to fourth place on the money list.
Marlene Hagge won the Sarasota Open in 1952, just 14 days after her 18th birthday. At 18 years and 9 months, Creamer becomes the secondyoungest firsttime winner in LPGA Tour history. (AP)
